French Harbour Strike Continues

January 31, 2011— France’s FNPD-CGT union called for a national strike of dock and harbour workers at the beginning of the month to press demands for early retirement for those who carry out hard physical work. The union originally said the current strike would last until Sunday, January 16, but has since called for continued action nationwide. Specific strike activity has varied harbour to harbour, with some details below:

Marseilles East and West Harbours:

  • Continuing the 1 hour stoppage at the end of odd days’ shifts
  • Continuing to cancel additional hours and exceptional shifts
  • On Friday, 28 January, the cancellation of Shift 1-2-3
  • On Sunday, 30 January, the cancellation of Shift 1-2-3
  • Continuing to cancel the 1 hour stoppage at the end of even days’ shifts
  • Continuing to cancel additional hours and exceptional shifts
  • On Saturday, 29 January, the cancellation of Shift 1-2-3
  • On Monday, 31 January, the cancellation of Shift 1-2-3

    Med-Europe Terminal:

  • Thursday, 27 January: road operations opening at 8:30am and sea operations ending at 19:30pm (S3)
  • Friday, 28 January: total closure of the Terminal (road and sea operations)
  • Saturday, 29 January: road operations closure and possibility of con-ro operations in S1 and S2 (without GPMM raising)
  • Sunday, 30 January: total closure of the Terminal (road and sea operations)
  • Monday, 31 January: road operations opening at 8:30am and possibility to do con-ro operations
  • The Terminal will reopen on 1 February at 6:30am for its sea operations and at 8:30am for its reception/delivery operations. Considering the prevailing delays, the closure during the weekend and the opening of the reception/delivery, no additional parking and surveillance franchise will be granted.
  •  

    Rouen, France:

  • Friday, 28 January: General Assembly at 9:00am
  • Saturday, 29 January: 24 hours of stoppage, from midnight to midnight. No temporary workers
  • Sunday, 30 January: no temporary workers. Monday, 31 January: 24 hours of stoppage, from midnight to midnight. No temporary workers
  • If a vessel is delayed or if a stop over is cancelled due to the strikes, connection fees, demurrage and port storage charges beyond the usual free detention and port storage period, will be chargeable to the shipper.
